Study focus - 3 things
- Use the imperfect tense to describe what things were like or what used to happen
- A simple Spanish letter needs greeting, main message, and closing
- Keep sentences clear and use familiar vocabulary from travel, school, and places
Section 1Letter structure
A simple Spanish letter can start with Querido or Querida, then the message, then a closing like Tu amigo or Tu amiga. Watch out: match Querido with a male reader and Querida with a female reader.
Section 2Using the imperfect
The imperfect is useful when describing a trip, school activity, city, weather, or routine in the past. Example: El hotel era grande means The hotel was big. Íbamos al parque means We used to go to the park.
Section 3Useful linking words
Use y, pero, también, porque, cuando, and todos los días to connect ideas. Here's the trick: short linked sentences are safer than one very long sentence with many mistakes.
Section 4Staying on task
If the prompt asks about a school trip, include trip details such as where you went, transport, what it was like, and what you used to do there. In plain words, answer the letter prompt, not a memorised paragraph.
Examples
Write one sentence: The hotel was big.
Use era from ser in the imperfect: El hotel era grande.
Write two letter sentences about a school trip to Spanish Town using the imperfect.
Example: Fui a Spanish Town con mi clase. El viaje era interesante y viajábamos en autobús. The imperfect describes what the trip was like and what was happening.
