Study focus - 3 things

  1. Spanish letters should have a greeting, clear body, and suitable closing
  2. Use present tense for hobbies and routines, and future structures for plans
  3. Answer every exam prompt point with connected, accurate sentences

Section 1Basic letter layout

An informal Spanish letter can begin with Querido or Querida, then a friendly opening, the main message, and a closing. Keep the writing organised so the examiner can see each required point.

Section 2Greetings and closings

Use Querido before a male name and Querida before a female name. Useful closings include Hasta pronto, Escríbeme pronto, Tu amigo, and Tu amiga.

Section 3Writing about hobbies

Use the present tense and hobby vocabulary when describing what you usually do: En mi tiempo libre, juego al fútbol y escucho música. Add opinions with me gusta and porque.

Section 4Writing about plans

Use ir a + infinitive or the simple future when describing plans. For example: Este fin de semana voy a ir a la playa. El año que viene estudiaré mucho.

Section 5Connectors and details

Connectors help the letter flow. Use primero, luego, también, pero, porque, and finalmente. Details such as cuándo, dónde, con quién, and por qué make the answer stronger.

Examples

Write an opening for a letter to your friend Carlos.

Querido Carlos, ¿Cómo estás? Espero que estés bien. This uses the masculine greeting and a friendly opening.

Write two sentences about a hobby and a future plan.

Example: En mi tiempo libre, escucho música porque es relajante. Este fin de semana voy a jugar al baloncesto con mis amigos.
