Study focus - 3 things

  1. Use simple question phrases to ask for directions
  2. Use direction phrases and prepositions of place to explain where something is
  3. Know common places in the city

Section 1Asking for directions

To ask where a place is, use ¿Dónde está...? Example: ¿Dónde está el banco? means Where is the bank? For politeness, add por favor.

Section 2Giving directions

Useful phrases include siga recto, doble a la derecha, doble a la izquierda, and cruce la calle. In plain words, you are telling someone to go straight, turn right, turn left, or cross the street.

Section 3Places in the city

Common city places include el banco, la farmacia, el hospital, la escuela, el parque, la estación, el supermercado, and el aeropuerto. Watch out: el and la matter because Spanish nouns have gender.

Section 4Prepositions of place

Use phrases like cerca de, lejos de, al lado de, enfrente de, detrás de, and entre. Here's the trick: these phrases help you say location without needing a long sentence.

Examples

Translate: Where is the hospital?

Use ¿Dónde está...? The answer is ¿Dónde está el hospital?

Give directions to a visitor in New Kingston: Go straight and turn left at the bank.

Use command phrases: Siga recto y doble a la izquierda en el banco.
