Heat Transfer

  3. Quiz
  4. Confident

Study focus - 3 things

  1. Heat energy moves from hotter objects or regions to cooler ones
  2. The three main methods of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation
  3. Good conductors, poor conductors, insulators, and surface colour affect heat transfer

Section 1Heat flow

Heat is energy transferred because of a temperature difference. It naturally moves from a hotter place to a cooler place until the temperatures become more even.

Section 2Conduction

Conduction is heat transfer through direct contact, especially in solids. Metals are good conductors, so a metal spoon in hot soup becomes hot quickly. Wood and plastic are poorer conductors.

Section 3Convection

Convection is heat transfer by the movement of fluids, meaning liquids and gases. Warm fluid becomes less dense and rises, while cooler fluid sinks. This creates a convection current.

Section 4Radiation

Radiation is heat transfer by infrared waves. It does not need particles, so it can travel through empty space. Heat from the Sun reaching Jamaica is an example of radiation.

Section 5Reducing or increasing heat transfer

Insulators reduce heat transfer. Dark, dull surfaces absorb radiation well, while shiny, light surfaces reflect radiation better. These ideas explain cooking pots, coolers, roof colours, and vacuum flasks.

Examples

A metal pot handle becomes hot while cooking. Which heat transfer method is this?

This is conduction because heat travels through the solid metal by direct contact.

Why can heat from the Sun reach Earth?

It travels by radiation, which can move through empty space without needing particles.

Now let's water it
