Study focus - 3 things
- Practical skills include starting, sprinting, pacing, jumping, throwing, and relay baton passing
- Warm-up and cool-down help prepare the body and reduce injury risk
- Correct technique improves performance and safety
Section 1Preparing the body
A warm-up prepares the body for activity by raising heart rate and loosening muscles. A cool-down helps the body recover after exercise. Watch out: skipping warm-up can increase injury risk.
Section 2Running skills
Running skills include starting quickly, using good arm action, lifting knees, and keeping the body relaxed. Sprints need a fast start and high speed. Longer races need pacing so the athlete does not use all energy too early.
Section 3Jumping and throwing skills
Jumping skills include approach, take-off, flight, and landing. Throwing skills include grip, stance, body movement, release, and follow-through. Here's the trick: the movement before the release or take-off matters.
Section 4Relay skills
Relay skills include holding the baton, running in the exchange zone, and passing smoothly. In a Jamaican school relay, a clean baton pass can be the difference between winning and losing. A fast runner still needs a safe exchange.
Examples
A runner starts an 800 m race as if it is a 100 m sprint. What skill is missing?
Pacing is missing. The runner needs to control speed so energy lasts for the whole race.
In a relay at Champs-style school practice, two runners slow down too much during the baton pass. What should they practise?
They should practise smooth baton passing in the exchange zone while maintaining speed and control.
