Section 1Event groups
Track and field events are grouped by the main action. Running events happen on the track. Jumping and throwing events are field events.
Section 2Running events
Running events include sprints, middle-distance races, long-distance races, hurdles, and relays. Sprints focus on speed, longer races focus on pacing, hurdles add barriers, and relays add teamwork.
Section 3Jumping events
Jumping events include long jump, high jump, and triple jump. These events require approach, take-off, flight, and landing. Watch out: jumping events are not just about jumping far or high; technique controls the result.
Section 4Throwing events
Throwing events include shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw. Each has rules about the throwing area, technique, and safety. Jamaica is famous for sprinting, but school athletics also includes jumps and throws.
Examples
Classify hurdles, high jump, and shot put.
Hurdles is a track event. High jump is a field jumping event. Shot put is a field throwing event.
