- Track and field includes running, jumping, and throwing events
- Track events happen on the running track, while field events happen in the jumping or throwing areas
- Good performance depends on technique, fitness, safety, and following rules
Section 1What track and field means
Track and field is a group of athletics events. Track events are mainly races, while field events include jumps and throws. In plain words, it is not one event; it is a whole set of events.
Section 2Track events
Track events include sprints, middle-distance races, long-distance races, hurdles, and relays. The main skill is moving efficiently and staying in control. Watch out: sprinting and long-distance running need different pacing.
Section 3Field events
Field events include jumping and throwing events. Jumping events test take-off, flight, and landing, while throwing events test grip, body position, release, and safety. Here's the trick: field events are technical, not just strength-based.
Section 4Why rules matter
Rules keep events fair and safe. At a school sports day in Jamaica, athletes must know lanes, starting signals, baton passing, and safe throwing areas. A strong performance can be disqualified if the rules are broken.
Examples
Classify the 100 m race and long jump.
The 100 m race is a track event because it is a race on the track. Long jump is a field event because it is a jumping event.
At Ardenne sports day, a relay team drops the baton outside the exchange zone. Why could this matter?
Relay races have baton-passing rules. If the baton exchange breaks the rule, the team may lose time or be disqualified.
