Study focus - 3 things
- Good recorder performance depends on posture, breath control, fingering, and tone
- Cover holes fully and use gentle air to avoid squeaks
- Practise slowly before trying to play at performance speed
Section 1Posture and hand position
Sit or stand tall so your breathing is free. Hold the recorder at a comfortable angle, with relaxed shoulders and curved fingers. Watch out: tense hands make fingering slower and less accurate.
Section 2Breath control
Recorder needs gentle, steady air. Blowing too hard often causes squeaks or a harsh sound. Here's the trick: think warm, soft air, not a big blast.
Section 3Fingering and holes
Cover each hole fully with the pads of your fingers. Even a tiny leak can change the note or make the recorder squeak. Practise moving between notes slowly until the fingers know the pattern.
Section 4Performance practice
Practise short sections, then join them together. Count carefully, listen for clean note changes, and restart from the tricky bar instead of always going back to the beginning. A school performance sounds better when the easy parts are steady and the hard parts are controlled.
Examples
A recorder note keeps squeaking. Name two things to check.
Check that the holes are fully covered and that the air is gentle. Leaky fingers and hard blowing are common causes of squeaks.
You are preparing for a school music assessment in Kingston and keep missing one bar. What is a smart practice method?
Practise that bar slowly several times, then join it to the bars before and after it. This targets the weak spot instead of repeating only the easy parts.
Now let's water it
