Study focus - 3 things
- A word processor is software used to create, edit, format, save, and print documents
- Word processing tools help make school documents clear, accurate, and professional
- Common exam tasks include editing text, using formatting, saving files, and preparing a document for printing
Section 1What word processing means
Word processing is the use of software to create and work with text documents. Examples include letters, reports, essays, minutes, and school assignments. The important idea is that a word processor lets you change text before printing or sharing it.
Section 2Editing documents
Editing means changing the contents of a document. You may insert words, delete mistakes, move paragraphs, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, or use spell check. Watch the difference: editing changes what the document says.
Section 3Formatting documents
Formatting changes how a document looks. Common formatting tools include bold, italics, underline, font size, font style, alignment, line spacing, bullets, numbering, margins, headers, and footers. Here's the trick: formatting changes appearance, not the main message.
Section 4Saving and printing
A document should be saved with a clear file name and stored in the correct folder. Save As is used when creating a new copy or choosing a different name, location, or file type. Before printing, use print preview and page setup to check margins, page orientation, and layout.
Section 5Using word processors responsibly
Good word processing includes accurate typing, neat layout, and honest use of sources. For a Grade 9 English essay or Social Studies report, a student should proofread the document, credit borrowed ideas, and save the file where it can be found again.
Examples
A student types a letter to the principal, corrects spelling errors, centres the heading, saves the file, and prints it. Which word processing tasks are being used?
Typing creates the document, correcting spelling is editing, centring the heading is formatting, saving stores the file, and printing produces a hard copy.
A Grade 9 student wants to make a History project easier to read. Name three formatting tools that could help.
The student could use headings in bold, bullets for lists, and proper line spacing. Font size, margins, and alignment could also improve readability.
