Study focus - 3 things

  1. Output devices show or produce information from a computer
  2. Output can be seen, heard, printed, or projected
  3. Choose the output device based on how the information needs to be presented

Section 1What output means

Output is information produced by a computer after processing. An output device presents that information to the user. Here's the trick: output comes out of the computer system.

Section 2Visual output

A monitor shows text, images, videos, and software screens. A projector shows the computer's display on a larger surface. In a classroom at Ardenne, a projector may be used so everyone can see a presentation.

Section 3Printed and sound output

A printer produces hard copy on paper. Speakers and headphones produce sound. Watch out: a printer is output because it produces information; it does not enter data into the computer.

Section 4Choosing output devices

Use a monitor for viewing, a printer for paper copies, speakers for sound, and a projector for large displays. Easy to mix up: headphones and speakers both output sound, but headphones are for private listening.

Examples

Which output device would you use to print a homework assignment?

A printer is the correct output device because it produces a hard copy on paper.

A teacher wants the class to see a slideshow on the wall. Which output device is best?

A projector is best because it displays the computer screen on a large surface for the class.
