- The Morant Bay Rebellion happened in Jamaica in 1865 after years of poverty, injustice, and political frustration
- Key figures include Paul Bogle, George William Gordon, and Governor Edward Eyre
- The rebellion led to harsh punishments and a major change from representative government to Crown Colony government
Section 1Background
After emancipation, many formerly enslaved Jamaicans still faced poverty, low wages, high taxes, and unfair treatment in the courts. Land was difficult to get, and many poor people felt their voices were ignored. Here's the trick: freedom had come, but equality and economic security had not.
Section 2Causes of the rebellion
Important causes included poverty, unemployment, high prices, lack of land, unfair justice, and limited political representation. Many people in St. Thomas felt that the colonial government was not listening to their problems. Watch out: do not give one cause only; the rebellion grew from several connected grievances.
Section 3Paul Bogle and protest
Paul Bogle was a Baptist deacon and community leader from Stony Gut. He helped organise people who wanted justice and fairer treatment. The protest at Morant Bay courthouse in October 1865 became violent after tensions rose.
Section 4Course of events
A crowd marched to Morant Bay, and violence broke out around the courthouse. Some officials and civilians were killed. Governor Edward Eyre responded with martial law and severe punishment across the area.
Section 5Effects and importance
Paul Bogle was executed, and George William Gordon was also executed after being blamed for encouraging unrest. Governor Eyre's actions were heavily criticised. In 1866, Jamaica became a Crown Colony, meaning Britain took more direct control of government.
Examples
A student says the Morant Bay Rebellion happened only because one court case made people angry. What is missing from that answer?
The answer misses the wider causes: poverty, land hunger, unfair justice, high prices, and lack of political voice. The court tensions were part of a bigger problem.
Explain one major political result of the Morant Bay Rebellion.
Jamaica became a Crown Colony in 1866. This reduced local representative government and gave Britain more direct control through the governor.
