Section 1What government does
Government is the system used to make decisions and manage a country. It creates laws, provides services, collects taxes, and protects citizens' rights. In Jamaica, government affects areas such as schools, roads, health care, and national security.
Section 2Democracy and voting
In a democracy, citizens have a say in choosing leaders. Voting is one of the main ways citizens participate. Elections allow people to choose representatives who make decisions on their behalf.
Section 3The voting process
A voter usually registers, checks where to vote, goes to a polling station, proves their identity, receives a ballot, marks their choice privately, and places the ballot in the box. The votes are then counted to determine the winner.
Section 4Voter identification
Voter identification helps confirm that a person is allowed to vote and is voting as the correct person. It protects the fairness of elections. At the same time, the process should be clear so eligible voters are not unfairly blocked.
Examples
A registered voter goes to a polling station, shows ID, marks a ballot privately, and places it in a ballot box. What process is this?
This is the voting process in an election. The voter is choosing a representative or leader.
Why is voter identification checked before someone receives a ballot?
It helps confirm that the person is eligible to vote and helps prevent someone voting in another person's name.
