Study focus - 3 things
- Settlement pattern describes how houses and buildings are arranged on the land
- Nucleated settlements are clustered, while dispersed settlements are spread out
- Site is the land a settlement is built on; situation is its location compared with other places
Section 1What settlement means
A settlement is a place where people live. Settlements may be small villages, towns, or large cities. In Geography, you study where settlements are located, how they grow, and how buildings are arranged.
Section 2Nucleated and dispersed patterns
A nucleated settlement has buildings clustered closely together, often around a road junction, market, church, school, or water supply. A dispersed settlement has buildings spread far apart, often in farming areas. Here's the trick: clustered means nucleated; spread out means dispersed.
Section 3Factors affecting settlement
Settlements develop where people can meet needs such as water, flat land, fertile soil, transport, jobs, safety, and services. Watch out: one factor is rarely enough by itself. Several factors usually work together.
Section 4Site and situation
Site means the actual land where a settlement is built, such as flat land, a hill, a river valley, or coastal land. Situation means where the settlement is in relation to other places, routes, resources, or markets. In plain words, site is the ground it stands on; situation is what it is connected to.
Section 5Portmore example
Portmore in St. Catherine grew partly because of its situation near Kingston, Spanish Town, main roads, jobs, and services. Its low-lying coastal site also creates planning challenges, such as drainage and flood risk. Good case-study answers mention both advantages and problems.
Examples
A village has houses tightly grouped around a road junction and a market. Which settlement pattern is this?
This is a nucleated settlement because the buildings are clustered closely together around central features.
Portmore is close to Kingston and major transport routes. Is this site or situation?
This is situation because it describes Portmore's location in relation to other places and routes.
Now let's water it
