- The futur simple is used for future actions, promises, predictions, and plans
- Regular verbs use the infinitive or future stem plus the endings ai, as, a, ons, ez, ont
- Some common verbs have irregular future stems that must be memorised
Section 1What futur simple means
The futur simple is used to say what will happen. For example, je visiterai means I will visit. It is useful for future plans, predictions, promises, and formal writing.
Section 2Regular endings
The futur simple endings are -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, and -ont. Add these endings to the future stem. For many -er and -ir verbs, the stem is the infinitive: parlerai, finiras, choisirons.
Section 3-re verbs
For regular -re verbs, remove the final e before adding the ending. Vendre becomes je vendrai, tu vendras, il vendra. This is a common exam detail because vendreai is not correct.
Section 4Irregular stems
Some frequent verbs use irregular future stems. Aller becomes ir-, avoir becomes aur-, être becomes ser-, faire becomes fer-, and venir becomes viendr-. The endings are still the same.
Section 5Futur simple vs futur proche
Futur proche often feels like going to do something soon: je vais étudier. Futur simple means will do: j'étudierai. In school writing, both can describe future plans, but the structure is different.
Examples
Form the futur simple of je + jouer.
Use the infinitive jouer as the stem and add -ai: je jouerai.
Translate: Next year, we will visit Martinique.
Use nous plus visiter in the futur simple: L'année prochaine, nous visiterons la Martinique.
