Study focus - 3 things

  1. The futur proche is used for actions that are going to happen soon
  2. The structure is subject + aller in the present tense + infinitive
  3. It is useful for writing about plans, school events, weekend activities, and holidays

Section 1What futur proche means

The futur proche is the near future tense. It describes what someone is going to do. For example, je vais étudier means I am going to study. In English, look for the idea going to.

Section 2How to form it

Use the present tense of aller, then add the infinitive of the main verb. The pattern is subject + aller + infinitive: nous allons jouer, elle va visiter, ils vont regarder.

Section 3Aller in the present tense

The forms of aller are je vais, tu vas, il/elle/on va, nous allons, vous allez, and ils/elles vont. The common trap is changing the second verb. Keep the second verb in the infinitive.

Section 4Using it for plans

Futur proche is common in letters and short paragraphs about plans. A student might write: Samedi, je vais aller à la plage avec ma famille. Dimanche, nous allons faire nos devoirs.

Section 5Negatives

To make futur proche negative, place ne and pas around the conjugated form of aller: je ne vais pas sortir. The infinitive stays after pas.

Examples

Translate: I am going to watch a film tonight.

Use je vais plus the infinitive regarder: Je vais regarder un film ce soir.

Rewrite nous jouons au football in the futur proche.

Conjugate aller for nous and keep jouer in the infinitive: Nous allons jouer au football.
