Study focus - 3 things

  1. Diet affects energy, growth, immunity, and long-term health
  2. Nutrition-related disorders can come from too little, too much, or the wrong balance of nutrients
  3. Know basic causes, symptoms, prevention, and management

Section 1Diet and the body

Your diet is the pattern of food and drink you usually take in. A healthy diet supports energy, concentration, growth, repair, and protection from illness. Watch out: one unhealthy meal is not the whole story, but habits over time matter.

Section 2Too little nutrients

Not getting enough nutrients can cause deficiency disorders. Lack of iron may cause anaemia, lack of vitamin C may cause gum problems and poor healing, and lack of protein-energy foods may affect growth. This is one of the most common exam slip-ups: name the missing nutrient, not just the condition.

Section 3Too much or poor balance

Too much sugar, salt, and fat can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. These conditions are linked to diet, activity level, family history, and lifestyle. Prevention usually means balanced meals, regular activity, water, and sensible portions.

Section 4Basic management

Management depends on the problem. It may include improving the diet, following medical advice, taking prescribed supplements, reducing excess sugar or salt, and becoming more active. In plain words, do not treat serious symptoms with guesswork.

Examples

A student often feels tired and looks pale. Which diet-related problem might a teacher suspect?

Anaemia may be suspected, especially if the diet is low in iron. The student should get proper medical advice rather than guessing.

A teen often buys sugary drinks and fried snacks after school in Half Way Tree. What two changes could reduce health risk?

Choose water more often and replace some fried snacks with fruit or a balanced meal. This lowers excess sugar and fat while improving nutrient intake.
