Study focus - 3 things

  1. Construction shift means rewriting a sentence in a new structure while keeping the same meaning
  2. Keep tense, subject, and key information consistent unless the instruction requires a change
  3. Check the whole sentence after shifting so it is grammatical and natural

Section 1What construction shift means

Construction shift is a grammar skill where you change the structure of a sentence without changing its meaning. The exam may give a starting word or phrase and ask you to rewrite the sentence. Here's the trick: the new sentence must say the same thing in a different way.

Section 2Follow the instruction exactly

Some items tell you to begin with a specific word, use a particular phrase, or change a sentence from active to passive. Do only what the instruction asks. Watch out: adding extra ideas can change the meaning and lose marks.

Section 3Keep the meaning

A correct construction shift keeps the same facts, tense, and relationship between ideas. If the original sentence says the team won yesterday, the new sentence should not say they will win tomorrow. In plain words, grammar changes, meaning stays.

Section 4Common shift patterns

Common patterns include changing active voice to passive voice, joining ideas with although or because, changing direct wording into a different sentence opening, and replacing a phrase with a clause. These patterns help you practise flexible sentence control.

Section 5Read it back

After shifting, read the whole sentence aloud in your head. A sentence can keep the meaning but still sound awkward or have a verb error. For example, if you are writing about a football match in Jamaica last week, past tense verbs should stay in past tense.

Examples

Rewrite without changing the meaning. Begin with 'Although': The rain was heavy, but the match continued.

Although the rain was heavy, the match continued. The connector changes the structure, but the meaning stays the same.

Rewrite in the passive voice: The students cleaned the classroom after lunch.

The classroom was cleaned by the students after lunch. The object becomes the subject, but the action and time stay the same.
