Study focus - 3 things

  1. Voting lets eligible citizens choose representatives in a democracy
  2. The voting process includes registration, identification, private voting, and counting ballots
  3. Free and fair elections need secrecy, accuracy, and respect for the rules

Section 1Why voting matters

Voting is one way citizens take part in democracy. It allows eligible people to choose representatives who make decisions on their behalf. The thing to remember is that voting connects citizens to government.

Section 2Before election day

A person must usually be registered before they can vote. Registration places the voter on an official voters' list. In Jamaica, voters also need to know their polling station so they go to the correct place on election day.

Section 3At the polling station

At the polling station, the voter is checked, identified, and given a ballot. The voter marks the ballot privately, then places it in the ballot box. Watch out: privacy matters because voters should not be pressured or watched while making their choice.

Section 4Voter identification

Voter identification confirms that the person is the registered voter. It helps prevent impersonation and double voting. Here's the trick: ID checks protect the process, but the vote itself must still be secret.

Section 5Counting and results

After voting ends, ballots are counted according to election rules. The candidate with the most valid votes in a constituency usually wins that seat. Fair counting helps citizens trust the result, even when their preferred candidate loses.

Examples

A voter marks a ballot behind a screen and folds it before placing it in the ballot box. Which democratic principle is being protected?

The secret ballot is being protected. The voter can choose freely because the choice is private.

A person reaches the polling station but their name is not on the voters' list. Why might they be unable to vote there?

Voters usually must be registered and listed for the correct polling place. The voters' list helps officials confirm eligibility.
