Study focus - 3 things
- Apparatus names matter because each tool has a specific job
- Good procedures keep experiments fair, accurate, and safe
- Watch out: safety rules are part of the science, not decoration
Section 1Common apparatus
A beaker holds or heats liquids. A measuring cylinder measures liquid volume more accurately than a beaker. A test tube holds small samples, and a Bunsen burner heats substances if your lab uses one.
Section 2Measuring carefully
Read a measuring cylinder at eye level from the bottom of the meniscus. Use the correct unit, such as cm3 or mL. Here's the trick: careful measuring prevents wrong conclusions.
Section 3Safe procedures
Wear goggles when told, tie back long hair, keep bags away from benches, and never taste chemicals. In a busy Kingston classroom lab, clear benches and calm movement prevent accidents.
Section 4Fair testing
A fair test changes one variable at a time and keeps the others controlled. Record results clearly in a table. The conclusion should match the evidence, not what you hoped would happen.
Examples
You need to measure 25 mL of water. Should you use a beaker or measuring cylinder?
Use a measuring cylinder because it is designed for measuring volume more accurately than a beaker.
A student changes both temperature and amount of salt in one experiment. Why is that a problem?
It is not a fair test. If two variables change, you cannot tell which one caused the result.
Now let's water it
Session runs notes to flashcards to quiz back-to-back.
