Study focus - 3 things
- The circulatory system transports substances around the body
- The heart pumps blood through blood vessels
- Double circulation has a pulmonary loop and a systemic loop
Section 1What the circulatory system does
The circulatory system moves blood around the body. Blood carries oxygen, digested food, hormones, heat, and waste products. This transport keeps cells supplied and removes substances they do not need.
Section 2Main parts
The main parts are the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart is a muscular pump. Blood vessels are tubes that carry blood, and blood is the liquid tissue that transports materials.
Section 3Double circulation
Humans have double circulation because blood passes through the heart twice in one complete journey. The pulmonary circulation moves blood between the heart and lungs. The systemic circulation moves blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
Section 4Why double circulation helps
Double circulation keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mostly separate. It also allows blood to be pumped strongly to the body after collecting oxygen from the lungs. This gives body cells a steady oxygen supply for respiration.
Examples
Blood travels from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. Which circulation is this?
This is pulmonary circulation because it is the loop between the heart and lungs.
Blood travels from the heart to the muscles in the legs and then back to the heart. Which circulation is this?
This is systemic circulation because it is the loop between the heart and the rest of the body.
Now let's water it
